Despite having permanent collections, Museon, a science museum in The Hague, also organizes theme-based temporary exhibitions every year. With this opportunity, our team was given the chance to contribute a museum display that could be used as an educational tool while also following the theme of the exhibition which is TASTE.

A science museum is a place where people, especially children, could discover and learn about new information. To successfully create an enjoyable learning experience for the children, implementing fun and playful experiences through specific interactions is important. That’s why The Tongue was thoughtfully designed to engage the visitors’ minds, muscles, and imaginations that could lead to learning outcomes. It has straightforward visuals that directly display elements of how we taste while also accompanied with other features that invite the children to make direct interaction with the display.

Interactive Features

The whole shape of the display was inspired by how the human’s tongue looks like. The Tongue’s surface was also built to also looks and feels real as the first interaction point of the user and the display.

The Flaps

The Flaps that are located at the back of The Tongue are the interactive parts where the children could read and learn more about the tongue as human body parts while the children are invited to imitate the possible movements that our tongue could do with the aid of the mirror foil that was attached at one side of the flaps.

The Tongue's Hole

The Tongue’s Hole was made as a mysterious part of the display to invite the children to inspect and guess the mysterious object inside of the hole with their sense of touch. The object inside the Tongue’s Hole could be easily replaced by the client depending on what topic they wanted to place on the display. The Tongue’s Hole was highlighted with the LED lamp to invite the children visually.

Several prototypes were made during the ideation phase in order to find the main shape of the display. In the end, after several phases of evaluation, a natural tongue shape was chosen to be the shape.
